Hikes for families

The easy trails are particularly suitable for families with children. If you are traveling with small children, take the Cable car from Kandersteg and walk down to Oeschinensee for around 25 minutes on a path suitable for baby carriages. Native flowers, wild animals and a fantastic panorama are on the program here. And a delicious Oeschi-Glacé awaits the little hikers at the Oeschinensee mountain restaurant.
For those who like it a little faster, there is the mountain coaster next to the mountain station, while those who prefer a quieter ride can enjoy a relaxing rowing boat trip on the lake.
Good to know: If you would like to barbecue at one of the official fireplaces on the lake, you can buy firewood from the café bar at the Oeschinensee mountain restaurant or bring your own.

Can a ticket with a boarding pass be changed to an earlier date?

Can a ticket also be purchased on site?

We recommend purchasing your ticket in advance from the ticket shop. Only a limited number of remaining tickets are available from the ticket machines on site. Please note: Mountain trips can only be booked on site if there are still places available for the desired time slot. If the time slot is already fully booked, transportation is unfortunately not possible. Further information can be found directly in the ticket shop.

Do dogs travel free of charge on the Cable car?

No, the day ticket costs CHF 8.00. The SBB dog pass is accepted on the Cable car Oeschinensee .

What means of payment can I use?

You can pay at the ticket machines and at the ticket office with all major credit and debit cards as well as with Twint. Cash and REKA checks are also accepted. Payment with REKA checks is only possible at the ticket counter. Further information and tickets can be found directly in our ticket store.

Are savings, tandem, community or Friends day passes valid?

No, SBB day passes are not valid for theOeschinensee Cable car . You can receive a discount with a valid SBB GA, SBB Half-Fare Card, Swiss Travel Pass, or a guest card from Kandersteg, Kandergrund, Frutigen, Adelboden, or Reichenbach.

What are the transportation guidelines for bicycles, stand-up paddleboards, scooters, etc.?

Bicycles, mountain bikes, children's bikes, scooters, SUPs (stand-up paddleboards), or other sports equipment will not be transported.

Is the Bernese Oberland Pass accepted?

No, the Berner Oberland Pass will no longer be accepted from January 2026, and there will be no discount on the gondola ride.

What advantages does the guest card offer?

Guests with a guest card from Kandersteg, Adelboden, Frutigen, Kandergrund, and Reichenbach receive a 10% discount on the gondola ride. You do not need to reserve a time slot (so-called boarding pass). Enter your guest card number here to receive discounts on mountain railway tickets in the ticket shop. Arrival and parking

How do I travel by train (public transport)?

You can reach Kandersteg by train from Spiez and Brig. From Adelboden and Frutigen there is a bus (AFA) to Kandersteg. The walk from the station takes approx. 10-15 minutes. From June to October, a local bus runs from the station to the valley station for every train arrival/departure.

Where can I park? Is it possible to reserve a parking space?

Parking in Kandersteg is limited on weekends and during the summer. Starting around 12:00 PM, parking spaces may no longer be available—we recommend arriving early. Parking is available for guests at the valley station from 6:00 AM until evening. Hikers heading to Oeschinensee should use the hiking parking lots in the village (lower hiking parking rates). Vehicles are not permitted to enter at night. Vehicle access is limited to a maximum length of 5 meters and a height of 2 meters. Paid parking spaces and parking spots for larger vehicles are located in the village and near the Schützenhaus. Parking spaces cannot be reserved in advance.

Can Oeschinensee be reached by car?

The private road to Oeschinensee is closed to all motorized traffic and bicycles. Oeschinensee cannot be reached by car, e-bike, mountain bike or other vehicles.

How do you get from the mountain station to the shore of Lake Oeschinen?

Oeschinensee reached on foot in around 30 minutes, and the path is easily accessible with a stroller. During the summer season, a paid electric taxi service runs every half hour from the mountain station to the Oeschinensee mountain restaurant Oeschinensee the lake shore and back, or as required when fully booked. Guests with limited mobility have priority in the electric taxi.

Where can campers, motorhomes etc. park?

Cable car no parking spaces for campers at the Cable car valley station, as the entrance height is limited to a maximum of 2 meters. Additional parking is available at Sunnbüel and at various locations in the village. Parking spaces are available at the Nordic Arena and at Bären (near Sunnbüel), among other places. Parking spaces with no height restrictions are located at the Schützenhaus or the community center.

Are there charging stations for electric cars?

Eight 11kW electric charging stations are available in our "P2" parking lot at the valley station. Entry is also possible when the parking lot is occupied - simply press the button on the entry column. Charging cables can be borrowed from the ticket office.

What are the outdoor guidelines for cycling?

Cycling of any kind is prohibited in the Oeschinensee area. Out of consideration for our guests, nature and for safety reasons, Oeschinensee can only be visited on foot. There is a judicial ban on cycling (mountain biking, e-biking, etc.). In addition, many forest trails lead through ecologically sensitive areas, i.e. rare and shy wild animals use these areas as retreats and quiet zones.

Where can coaches park?

There are no parking spaces for coaches at the valley station of Cable car Kandersteg. These can be found at various locations in the village. Only a short stop for loading and unloading is permitted at the bus stop at the valley station. For group reservations, the group leader will be allocated a coach parking space.

What outdoor guidelines apply when providing first aid?

In an emergency, call the 1414 rescue service immediately. In winter, the SOS patrolman (0041 79 481 01 12) should also be informed. There is an SOS room at the mountain and valley stations. Defibrillators are located at the mountain and valley stations and at the Oeschinensee mountain restaurant, near the lakeshore.

How do I prepare properly for a hike?

Find out in advance about the current local conditions, in particular closures, hazards and weather conditions. Our outdoor guidelines, information boards and status displays will help you find your way around. Adjust your goals and leisure activities according to your fitness and equipment - you are partly in high mountains. Plan enough time for your hike, take sufficient provisions with you and check your equipment.

What outdoor guidelines apply when dealing with snakes?

There are snakes in the area, including venomous ones. Stay on the trails and keep your dog on a short leash. Remain calm at all times and move away whenever possible if you see a snake. If you are bitten and are unsure of the snake’s species, immediately call emergency services (1414) and the ranger (0041 79 603 28 78). If possible, take a photo of the snake and closely monitor the bite site.

What should I bear in mind when choosing hiking equipment?

Wear shoes suitable for hiking—preferably hiking boots—and bring a backpack and hiking poles. Dress appropriately for the season and make sure you have adequate sun protection (sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen). It’s a good idea to bring a change of clothes. Also, pack enough food and drinks. A hiking map or our free overview map (available at the valley and mountain stations) is recommended. Remember to bring a fully charged cell phone with the most important emergency numbers (limited cell service in parts of the area), a first-aid kit, and a pocket knife.

How do I contact the ranger?

You have the option of calling the ranger on 0041 79 603 28 78. Alternatively, you can also speak to him in person while he is carrying out his inspection tour of the area. Do not hesitate to get in touch with him to clarify any questions or exchange information.

What outdoor guidelines apply to the "Spitze Stei" exclusion zone?

A large part of the south-eastern shore of Oeschinensee has been declared a restricted area by the Canton of Bern due to the risk of falling rocks and rockslides. There is an absolute ban on access here! There is a danger to life! Please also draw the attention of others who wish to enter the area and/or call the ranger on 0041 79 603 28 78. What outdoor guidelines apply to rockfall?

After rainfall and strong temperature fluctuations (day/night), the risk of rockfall, wet avalanches, debris flow and rockfall increases. Alarm signs are fresh impact marks, rock deposits and outcrops. The more exposed the path, the higher the risk. In such places, it is important to move on quickly. Hiking is always at your own risk. Many rockfalls are often caused by other hikers, mountaineers or animals. Avoid throwing any stones, as you do not know who is below you in the terrain.

What outdoor guidelines apply to behavior on pastures?

Stay calm, do not startle the animals and do not frighten them. Always close the gates and follow the footpaths. In general, cows are curious and harmless. Whether large or small - cows and cattle always perceive your dog as a predator. Keep your dog on a lead and keep it under control.

Gastronomy / Overnight stay

Is there accommodation available at Oeschinensee ?

During the summer season you can only stay overnight in Chalet Arva . A reservation is mandatory. Three SAC huts in the Oeschinensee area offer further overnight accommodation. Camping is only permitted at Camping Rendez-Vous at the valley station or at the ski jump (open all year round). There are also various pitches in Kandersteg.

Where can I get snacks or something to satisfy my hunger?

If you are hungry or have a small appetite, you will find a selection of hot and cold snacks as well as a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks in the kiosk at the mountain station and in the café bar on the shore of the lake.

What are the gastronomic offerings?

In the Oeschinensee area, you can choose from a variety of dining options. These include the Oeschinensee mountain restaurant and the Chalet Arva (both near the lake) as well as the Bergstübli at the mountain station. General information

Where are the toilets located in the Oeschinensee area?

The public toilets are located at the mountain and valley stations and at the mountain restaurant near the lakeshore. There are more toilets in Oeschinensee. Going to the toilet in nature should be avoided. However, if you do need to use the "natural toilet", please do not leave any paper, tissues or wet wipes behind.

Is the Cable car to Oeschinensee wheelchair accessible?

Yes, the Cable car is wheelchair-accessible and offers a barrier-free ride to the mountain station. From there, a chargeable electric cab runs every half hour from 10:45 am during the summer season to the Oeschinensee mountain restaurant near the lakeshore and back again. One wheelchair can be taken per trip.

Are Oeschinensee (such as weddings) permitted in the Oeschinensee area?

No, Oeschinensee is located in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and is surrounded by various protected areas, including plant conservation areas, dry meadows and wildlife rest areas. Due to these special protective measures, all (commercial) events and drone flights are prohibited by law. Compliance with these rules is monitored by rangers.

What applies to guests with limited mobility?
