Ice fishing

Fishing on ice is like fishing in the summer, just a little colder…

A one-of-a-kind experience at Lake Oeschinen. Fish on the frozen Lake Oeschinen in the UNESCO World Heritage Site. But be careful: Wear warm clothes, temperatures are cold!

Winter season starts Dec 22, all slopes and tracks will be open. The lake is not frozen yet.

Hiking access to Oeschinensee is closed due to slope preparations. Please consider that in winter, no official walking access from town to the lake. For your own safety use the cable car.

Thickness of the ice & times

Ice fishing is allowed from January 1 until mid of March. The average ice layer is between 30 and 50 cm. All guests are requested to leave the lake and descent to Kandersteg at 5 pm the latest.


Fishing licences are sold at the Restaurant Oeschinensee.
Adults: CHF 28.00
Children (-16.99 y): CHF 17.00
Two rods per person allowed.

Danger level

The danger level (avalanches and ice) may be changed according to the situation, as well during daytime. The present level you may find here.

Lake access

The lake Oeschinen is a cantonal lake open to public. The access is on own risk at all times. Before every access on the ice an individual danger evaluation has to be made (avalanche, ice, etc.).

Distance from hiking trail

Please maintain a distance of at least 50 m from the hiking trail. Water can get to the surface of the ice through the drilled holes, making it more difficult to groom the winter hiking trails on Lake Oeschinen. Thank you!

Fishing Supplies and Ice Augers

Fishing supplies such as augers or rods are not for sale or rent at Lake Oeschinen – please bring all necessary equipment with you! You can rent augers and rods in Kandersteg:
